New heights for the Youth Media Awards

New Kid se convierte en la primera novela gráfica en ganar la medalla Newbery.

El 27 de enero, la Asociación Estadounidense de Bibliotecas (ALA) anunció los premios Youth Media Awards en el Midwinter Meeting en Filadelfia.

Allí, la organización hizo públicos los mejores libros, videos y audiolibros para niños y jóvenes que fomentan el trabajo original y creativo en el campo de la literatura y los medios de comunicación infantil y juvenil. Y en la edición de 2020, una novela gráfica ganó la medalla John Newbery por primera vez en sus casi 100 años de historia, el título fue Jerry Craft’s,  New Kid , ilustrado por el autor y publicado por HarperCollins Children’s Books, una división de Editores de HarperCollins. La Medalla John Newbery se otorga a “la contribución más distinguida a la literatura estadounidense para niños” de la Asociación de Servicios Bibliotecarios para Niños (ALSC).

Los premios ALA Youth Media Awards , también incluyen los prestigiosos premios Newbery, Caldecott, Printz y Coretta Scott King Book Awards, los cuales son elegidos entre comités compuestos por bibliotecarios y otros expertos en literatura y medios, fueron otorgados a otros títulos como  The Undefeated,  de Kwame Alexander. ,  Dig,  de AS King,  The Night Diary , de Veera Hiranandani,  The Book of Boy , de Catherine Gilbert Murdock y  Merci Suárez Changes Gears,  de Meg Medina, entre otros.

Según School Library Journal , las novelas gráficas habían sido nombradas títulos de Newbery Honor en el pasado con El Deafo de Cece Bell   en 2015 y Roller Girl de Victoria Jamieson   en 2016, pero esta es la primera victoria para una novela gráfica. This One Summer de Mariko y Jillian Tamaki   fue un título de honor de Caldecott en 2015.
