According to the World Meteorological Organization, sea levels in the South-West pacific are rising above the global average rate.
The WMO’s State of the Climate in the South-West Pacific 2022 report revealed water levels are rising around 4 mm per year in some parts of the region.
Given the area’s low-lying lands, the fast rising sea level could leave many territories vulnerable to flooding and erosion.
Likewise, the South-West Pacific is particularly vulnerable to rising sea temperatures given the area’s already-high temperatures, which could lead to increased meteorological activity.
