Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg lamented government pressure to supress COVID-related content during the pandemic in a letter posted to the Committee on the Judiciary of the US House of representatives on Monday.
The company was pressured by senior Biden administration officials to “censor certain COVID-19 including humor and satire.” The letter notes that the official expressed a great deal of frustration when the company did not accede to its requests.
The company regrets some of its decisions and is willing to push back against such government requests in the future, according to the letter.
The letter also mentions the demotion of content related to corruption allegations regarding then-democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s family due to FBI warnings about a potential Russian disinformation campign.
“It’s since been made clear thart the reporting was not russian disinformations, and in retropspect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story,” notes the letter.
