Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau announced a levy of 100% on Chinese electric vehicles, as well as 25% on Chinese steel and aluminum. The tariff will also include hybrid passenger automobiles, trucks, buses and delivery vans.
The move to protect domestic producers follows similar tariffs recently announced by the European Union.
According to S&P mobility Canadian zero emission vehicles accounted for 12.5% of the Canadian market in 1Q24 down from 13.2% in 4Q 2023.
The measures will be implemented 15 October according to Trudeau.
