The best March travel destinations

The dawn of March is one that feels momentous. It’s a slow slog to get there – the painful dragging on of winter weather, the seemingly never-ending months of January and February. But the arrival of March signals the advent of spring. Finally, you made it to lighter days, you can put your thermals back in storage, breathe a sigh of optimistic relief, and celebrate with a trip away. Flowers are beginning to bloom, waking up is not quite as difficult and post-work drinks no longer need be conducted by candlelight. Schools are in session so its prime for an adults-only escape, and the change of season means great deals are there for the taking. But where to go on holiday in March? Skiing is still an option, its shoulder season at beach escapes everywhere from the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean, and much of Europe is starting to defrost again. For inspiration, see below our picks for the best to visit in March.

Tromsø, Norway

350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, this Norwegian city is a magical place to escape to in March. It’s coming to the end of winter, so temperatures aren’t as bitterly cold as the previous months, but travellers will still get the excitement of wrapping up in lots of layers and heading out to explore in the snow. Stroll through Tromsø to admire the generations-old wooden houses, each painted a different colour and stop by the Arctic Cathedral, an impressive architectural feat with a distinctive triangular shape and gorgeous stained-glass windows. You’re still in with a good chance to spot the Northern Lights, too – head out on a tour to get away from any light pollution and wait with bated breath for the show to start.

Seville, Spain

If you’re sick and tired of the cold weather, it’s time to head south. Seville is one of the best European destinations for finding the first signs of sunshine after a long winter. Despite often being overlooked in favour of larger Spanish cities, it’s got its own story to tell – a fascinating history, rich culture and beautiful architecture. It’s also great for foodies; the Andalusian capital has its own flavour and style when it comes to Spanish cuisine. Visit El Rinconcillo for a true taste of Seville, where waiters will whisk over dish after dish of speciality dishes.

Iceland

Iceland is a pretty spectacular place to visit, and March is the perfect time to do so. You’ll avoid the madding crowds of the summer travellers and miss the piercing cold of winter – but you’re still in for a decent chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Start in Reykjavik, where you can spend days hopping between the city’s best restaurants and cosying up in candlelit bars before driving out to the wilderness to experience Iceland’s lunar landscapes and volcanic beauty in all its glory.

Los Angeles, USA

Los Angeles is one of those destinations that has something new to offer every time you visit. In March, the temperature hovers around a warm 18°C, perfect for hiking up for the ultimate LA vistas, barefoot strolls along the beach and hopping between the shops around Abbot Kinney Boulevard. In between activities, refuel – LA is famous for its food trucks, but head to Tacos 1986 the city’s most sought-after tacos.

Cornwall, UK

Cornwall is beautiful year-round, but visiting in March having entire sweeps of golden sands to yourself, the best tables at Cornwall’s top restaurants, and lower prices on shoulder-season stays. Visit the Minack Theatre, brave the waters to paddleboard to St Michael’s Mount or head inland for some of the country’s best walks – Rough Tor is our favourite, with wild, rugged scenery and amazing views from the peak.
