The United States may be running out of its groundwater reserves, says a new analysis conducted by the New York Times.
According to the NYT, more than 90% of the aquifers supplying the entire U.S. water system have been severely depleted.
Because U.S. water reserves are regulated by the state instead of the federal government, there’s minimal data on the impact of depleting groundwater reserves on the nation as a whole, alleges the NYT.
But as climate change continues to impact rainfall and forces farmers to use more and more groundwater in turn, experts warn that some parts of the U.S. may run out of drinking water in the decades to come.
