After months of speculation, scientists from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that 2023 was officially the world’s hottest year on record.
According to the CCCS, the average temperature in 2023 hit 14.98 degrees Celsius, up from 2016’s previous record of 14.81 degrees Celsius.
2023 also represented the very first time that every day of the year was at least 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
“The extremes we have observed over the last few months provide a dramatic testimony of how far we now are from the climate in which our civilization developed,” said CCCS Director Carlo Buontempo.
