A new study published in the Science Advances journal has revealed that the majority of U.S. hurricane deaths are concentrated in counties ranked between medium and high on the Center of Disease Control and Prevention’s social vulnerability index.
According to the study, more than 94% of hurricane deaths between 1988 and 2019 took place in these vulnerable counties.
The findings are significant as recovery from devastating hurricanes is often prolonged in low-income and socially vulnerable areas.
The research likewise revealed that 70% of the deaths in question occurred between 2004 and 2019.
