According to new scientific research, global warming’s effects on seasonal snowfall could put the global ski resort industry on the way out of business.
If global temperatures reach 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, 53% of European ski resorts would stand at very high risk of scarce levels of snow.
If temperatures manage to surge above 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the number of ski resorts impacted by scare snow would reach 98%.
“The future of winter sport relies on how well we reduce emissions in the coming decades,” said Protect our Winters UK’s Dom Winter. “Certainly at 2C the lower elevation resorts would be in big trouble. But there will still be places with natural snow in the Alps, so higher elevation resorts could survive. The concern is how expensive and elitist they might become.”
