According to new data from the Brazilian government, deforestation of the nation’s Amazon rainforest fell 56.8% year-over-year this September.
However, the Amazon is currently facing one of the worst droughts the region has seen in more than four decades.
Despite the drought, the rate of forest fires in the Amazon also dropped to 36% last month, down from the year prior.
The news comes just one month after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced new climate goals for the country.
