Philantropy is defined as the altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement usually manifested by donations of money or work.

And since the beginning of his success, back in 1994, when he became the top name inside the technology rise of the time, Bill Gates has come to prove himself as one of the biggest leaders in the art of philanthropy.

Since that time, Bill and his wife, Melinda, have donated 35 billion dollars for the improvement of global healthcare and the reduction of poverty worldwide, including $16bn in 1999 and another $5.1bn one year later.

This year, Gates donated 64 million Microsoft shares, which stands out as $4.6bn, making it the largest gift to charity he has made since he cultivated himself as one of the most powerful, rich and creative men in the world.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Americans will spend $259 billion caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in 2017.

Now, the billionaire and co-founder of Microsoft pledged around 100-million for enhancing the fight and research treatment for Alzheimer´s disease.

Half of these donations are set for the Dementia Discovery Fund and other organizations focusing on bettering approaches towards Alzheimer´s investigations.

In his blog, Bill Gates explained he acts on knowing the human cost of the disease and how “awful it can be to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity, and not being able to do anything about it”.

Philanthropy: The best way to create a new and better world

In 2010, Bill Gates, along with other powerful billionaires like Warren Buffett, George Lucas, Lynn Schusterman, Sara Blakely, Richard and Joan Branson, Michael R. Bloomberg, Lynne and Marc Benioff, and some of the world´s richest people, created “Giving Pledge”, a promise to give half of their wealth to charity.

This, and many of his other actions, have been detailed by Gates as “building on the wonderful tradition of philanthropy will ultimately help the world become a much better place”.

Gates feels optimistic on the chances that can be created with these types of actions by him and his colleagues, who work and in hand is transforming the social landscape through philanthropy.
