Worries about privacy and security has led Microsoft to announce it doesn’t plan to ship its artificial intelligence tool Recall when the Copilot+ PC is released on June 18, as previously planned.
Recall, which tracks user activity by taking regular screenshots and allows users to search for their previous actions, will no longer be a “broadly available” tool, but will now be a preview feature available only through the Windows Insiders Program. Once the company gets feedback through WIP, Recall will be launched for all Copilot+ PCs.
After the AI tool was announced, concerns grew about how hackers could create tools that would pull user information, such as passwords and usernames. In response, Microsoft added more security protections, such as mandating that users prove their identity through a pin, fingerprint or facial recognition with Windows Hello, as well as developing an encrypted search database.
“This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers,” Windows Corporate Vice President Pavan Davuluri wrote in a blog post last week.
