So many job hunters are using artificial intelligence the wrong way, says Jeremy Schifeling, the founder of The Job Insiders, starting with how they prompt ChatGPT to help develop their resume.
When a job seeker enters a generic prompt, such as “generate a marketing resume,” the results are also generic—and hiring managers can tell. Even worse, AI tools often make up skills for the job seeker, writing bullet points that are non-specific and unlikely to reflect the person’s actual responsibilities and capabilities.
Schifeling recommends starting with a human-written resume draft, and then using AI tools to help fill in missing keywords and suggest ways to incorporate them organically. AI can also help a job hunter add quantitative impact to certain resume sections. However, be sure to proofread the resume before submitting to ensure that it accurately reflects experience and skills.
