How Will North America’s C-Suite Navigate Market Uncertainty in Q2 2026?

CEO North America / May – June – July 2026

As summer 2026 unfolds, North American businesses are navigating heightened market volatility, escalating global tensions, and a surge in CEO turnover across leading corporations. Despite this turbulence, the C-suite remains cautiously optimistic: the U.S. economy continues to show resilience, posting a 2% annual growth rate in the first quarter and recording the S&P 500’s strongest April since 2020.

The evolving USMCA framework is a central concern for executives as its mandatory review approaches in June. Canada and Mexico are strengthening bilateral ties, while ongoing border disputes and tariff threats are increasing tensions. Currently, Mexico’s trade surplus has surged 80.3% year-over-year to $5.93 billion, and Canada’s economy remains robust, with its fiscal deficit now projected to be smaller than previously forecast.

Supply chain disruptions continue to be a critical concern. Rising oil prices, fueled by ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and a U.S. blockade, have introduced more uncertainty, with the World Bank warning that energy costs could rise another 24% if the Iran conflict escalates.

CEO turnover in Corporate America has risen significantly, and analysts expect this high rate will continue as companies face economic challenges and changing stakeholder expectations. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, CEO departures have increased by 17% year-over-year, driven by boardroom pressures and shifting market conditions. Several major departures at Apple, Coca-Cola, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Disney, and Adobe suggest that this trend will persist throughout the quarter.

Notably, according to Russell Reynolds’ Global CEO Turnover Index, in Q2, boards are seeking both experience and talent, as 41% of recent new S&P 500 CEOs had previous experience leading public companies, up from 25% the year before.

This quarter, regulatory developments around AI are taking center stage in the North American business landscape. The U.S. Congress is deliberating the AI Accountability Act, which could introduce new compliance burdens for companies deploying generative AI. In Canada, the Digital Charter Implementation Act is set for enforcement in July, intensifying the focus on responsible AI adoption.

Leading executives from Big Tech face increasing pressure to demonstrate the value of their hefty digital investments while dealing with intensified legal and regulatory scrutiny from expanded antitrust actions by the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission, along with new investigations into Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, and Meta prompted by the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

Currently, labor markets across North America remain tight. According to Trading Economics, U.S. unemployment is at 4.3%, Canada’s at 6.7%, and Mexico’s at 2.4%. However, the C-suite must address ongoing talent shortages, especially in technology, logistics, and healthcare, which continue to challenge hiring and retention across the region.

Looking ahead, the C-suite is focused on U.S. inflation projections for the remainder of 2026, which now range between 3.3% and 4.2%. Mexico’s inflation is expected to reach 5.10% by the end of the quarter, while the Bank of Canada anticipates a return to its 2% target later this year. Despite inflationary pressures, the IMF forecasts U.S. real GDP growth at 2.3% for 2026, with Canada at 1.3% and Mexico at 1.4%.

As the landscape evolves, North America’s C-suite will be challenged to anticipate regulatory shifts, address persistent talent gaps, and steer through geopolitical volatility. Executives who combine agility with a focus on measurable results will be best positioned to drive growth and sustain a competitive edge in the quarters ahead.
