Demand for hydration drives innovation

Fueled by consumers’ demand for hydration drinks other than water, the global electrolyte hydration drinks market surged to $35.2 billion in 2023, prompting beverage companies to seize the opportunity with the introduction of new products, according to Precedence Research.

PepsiCo in March introduced Gatorade Water, an electrolyte-infused alkaline water beverage, while BodyArmor, a Coca-Cola brand, launched Flash I.V. Hydration Boosters, single-serve powder sticks. Some companies, such as GoHydrate, focus on clean label innovations, with beverage mixes that are free from sugar, low in sodium and contain vitamin D.

“Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the holistic health benefits of being fully hydrated,” said Mintel analyst Alex Beckett. “Demand for electrolyte drinks will be driven by more frequent heatwaves, the aging population and also incidents of water toxicity—excessive consumption of water.”

The global market is expected to grow to $58.97 billion by 2032. “Consumers are increasingly seeking products that not only replenish fluids but also provide quick energy boosts and efficient rehydration, especially in today’s fast-paced lifestyle,” said Martin Donald Murray, CEO of waterdrop.
