Hurricane Otis hit Mexico’s pacific coast on Wednesday morning, devastating the resort town of Acapulco in its wake.
The storm rapidly intensified from a Category 1 storm to a Category 5 storm in the span of less than 24 hours before making landfall, making it the strongest storm on record to ever hit the area.
The powerful hurricane knocked out all of Acapulco’s communications and rendered the local government incommunicado with the Mexican federal government in what’s been called a “nightmare scenario.”
The highway between Acapulco and Mexico City, the main artery between the coastal town and the rest of the country, was reportedly also blocked by landslides caused by Otis, hampering evacuations inland.
