Artificial intelligence is the future of technology and how we perceive it.
With the recent influx of personal assistants from places like Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home, it’s notable how artificial intelligence is growing. With the ability to learn and adapt to its environment, AI could prove to be a game changer in how computers work. For instance, in the construction of autonomous vehicles, manufacturers such as Tesla and many more use multiple sensors, whether sonar or optical in order that the vehicle takes in its environment and through AI decides if it needs to speed up, slow down, change lanes, etc. But that’s just one use of AI in action. There are many others.
Whilst AI is software-based its main use is to control robotics. A simple example of this currently being used would be a Roomba. The small vacuum moves in a forward motion until it bumps into a wall which tells it to turn and go in another direction until the room is clean or until the battery runs low to return to the docking station. A more complex example would be a fully-fledged humanoid robot. Imagine this. You’re twenty years into the future and you walk into a nursing home. You’ll most likely see many robots using AI to take care of the patients. Their AI would be able to take care of the patients and their needs by learning and adapting to the circumstances whether that be keeping track of a patient’s needs, like keeping healthy, or helping them get around. They would also be able to monitor the vitals of the patient and use their knowledge to decide whether they need to take a pill or if they are at increased risk of something like heat stroke because they were outside all day.
Another amazing use for AI is surgery. Robots are the future of surgery; they are much more precise than the way traditional surgery was conducted. Take the DaVinci machine at the University of Pennsylvania hospital. It uses robots to assist surgeons during operations. Its precision and accuracy cut down on recovery time and have helped many people with complex surgeries. Now imagine cutting out the doctor and replacing him or her with AI, able to adapt to the situation, make life changing decisions in milliseconds and with more knowledge than most doctors due to having an entire database of medical information at its disposal which it can recall as fast as it needs to.
In conclusion, AI is the future of technology and will revolutionize many aspects of our life. From the way we drive to the way we function as elderly citizens. The combined power of knowledge and machine learning can lead to endless possibilities and ways for it to be used.
