Just months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, direct-to-consumer orthodontics company SmileDirectClub officially shut down Friday after nine years in business.
SmileDirectClub previously burst onto the scene in 2014 by offering teeth-straightening invisible aligner treatments at approximately $3,000 less than leading competitors.
According to a statement on the company’s website, SmileDirectClub “has made the incredibly difficult decision to wind down its global operations, effective immediately.”
Customers in the middle of teeth-straightening invisible aligner treatments will not receive additional treatment from SmileDirectClub, with the company encouraging clients to instead consult with a local orthodontist to finish their dental plan.
