On Thursday, U.S. automaking giant General Motors offered members of the United Auto Workers union a 10% wage hike during contract negotiations – the largest pay raise offered by GM in decades.
The offer would also give new-hires a 56% pay bump across the course of the proposed four year contract, while temporary workers would receive a 20% compensation hike.
However, the union was swift to dismiss the offer with the UAW president characterizing the proposal as “insulting.”
The UAW’s strike deadline is set for just shy of midnight on Sept. 14, giving the two parties less than a week to reach a deal with one another.
