Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC and Sony Group announced on Tuesday the formation of a $4.69 billion joint venture (The venture, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp), aimed at developing and manufacturing next-generation image sensors in southern Japan.

The joint venture will act as a central hub for developing and manufacturing smartphone image sensors, utilizing advanced technology, according to the companies.
Sony will lead development of core image sensor technologies as well as product planning and design, while the venture will use TSMC’s advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise.
