A report from the IMF states that women are at risk of losing out over the course of the energy transition due to a lack of STEM studies needed in green energy.
Only 6% of women work in green jobs in advanced economies while 20% of men do. Despite the substantial wage premium of green jobs even less women hold them in developing countries.
“Women account for less than a third of STEM graduates in many countries, leaving them less prepared for green jobs that will shape the future labor market,” noted the IMF. “Without targeted efforts to increase such participation, the green transition may worsen workforce gender inequality.”
The rport recommends that government’s lower the entry barriers for women in STEM education through incentives and equal access to green jobs.
