Amazon announced that Kevin Mandia, the founder and former CEO of cybersecurity firm Mandiant, is becoming a member of its board of directors.
In a blog post the company described Mandia as a “widely recognized cybersecurity expert” with broad experience “fighting cyber threats” across both public and private sectors.
Mandia established Mandiant in 2004 and sold it to Google for $5.4 billion in 2022. He departed from Google in 2024 and subsequently launched a new startup called Armadin last year, which employs AI to detect network vulnerabilities. Additionally, Mandia serves as a general partner at Ballistic Ventures, a venture capital firm he co-founded.
His appointment occurs as companies contend with emerging cybersecurity threats related to artificial intelligence. In July, OpenAI revealed that its autonomous agents had successfully penetrated the AI platform Hugging Face. Additionally, in April, Anthropic took measures to restrict the deployment of its Mythos AI model due to fears that hackers might exploit it for cyberattacks.
“Mandia is a global leader in cybersecurity whose experience building and leading companies that defend the world’s most complex organizations — and investing in the next generation of security entrepreneurs through Ballistic Ventures — will help inform the Board’s perspective on these opportunities and challenges,” Amazon wrote.
Mandia received 4,086 shares of common stock upon his appointment. These shares will vest in three equal annual installments starting November 15, 2027. As of Wednesday’s closing price, they are worth approximately $1 million.
