Multiple large tech firms that work with AI technologies have agreed to collaborate to combat AI-driven election manipulation, such as faked pictures and videos. Under the “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections,” companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok and Adobe will work together on technology that flags misleading AI content and will also educate the public about these efforts.
The agreement comes as OpenAI launches Sora, a realistic AI text-to-video generator. This and other new AI tools can be used to create text, images, video and audio that could be used to trick and manipulate voters.
Some of the participants had recently agreed to collaborate on standards for embedding detectable metadata in AI-generated images. The new agreement will include efforts to add machine-readable signals that show where AI-generated content came from, and participants will also look into the potential for their own AI to be used in creating misleading election-related content.
Finally, the companies will advise the public on ways to “protect themselves from being manipulated or deceived by this content.”
