Space exploration company SpaceX successfully managed to send its first text messages on T-Mobile’s network via its Starlink satellite internet service, the Elon Musk-owned company announced Wednesday.
The news comes just days after SpaceX launched the first six of its direct-to-device capable satellites following approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.
According to SpaceX, the company “sent and received our first text messages to and from unmodified cell phones on the ground to our new satellites in space” during its test Monday, which “validates” the function of its infrastructure.
The company reportedly aims to offer D2D SMS services beginning this year before expanding to voice and data in 2025.
