Meta Platforms will begin labeling AI-generated images from other companies via invisible indicators in the files.
It already labels images created with its own AI tools and will do the same for AI-generated images created on services from Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Midjourney and Shutterstock. The labels will be added to content posted to Facebook, Instagram or Threads, said Nick Clegg, the company’s president of global affairs.
“Even though the technology is not yet fully mature, particularly when it comes to audio and video, the hope is that we can create a sense of momentum and incentive for the rest of the industry to follow,” Clegg, said. Meta also plans to require people to label their own AI-generated audio and video content, with penalties for not doing so.
However, it is not currently possible to label AI-generated text from tools like ChatGPT, he noted. “That ship has sailed.”
