With avian flu back on the rise throughout the U.S. chicken population, it looks like egg prices are ready to fly the coop once again.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 586 backyard flocks and 426 commercial flocks have tested positive for bird flu in the past 30 days.
More than 72.5 million chickens died from the virus between 2022 and 2023 alone, which pushed the price of a dozen eggs to a record $5.46 per dozen last December.
As bird flu continues to rage nationwide, U.S. consumers may soon feel the effects of unwanted “egg-flation” while grocery shopping.
