The US Supreme Court stated on its website that today is an opinion day, providing the first opportunity for a ruling on President Trump’s global tariffs.
In early November, the court heard arguments on the legality of Trump’s global trade duties on trading partners. The case concerns Trump’s April 2 “Liberation Day” tariffs, which imposed tariffs ranging from 10-50% on most imports, as well as duties on Canada, Mexico, and China aimed at combating fentanyl trafficking.
Trump claims he imposed his tariffs by invoking a 1977 law meant for national emergencies.
A ruling against Trump on tariffs would undermine his key economic policy and mark his most significant legal setback since reentering the White House.
“We have a big Supreme Court case,” Trump told House Republicans Tuesday. “I hope they do what’s good for our country. I hope they do the right thing. The president has to be able to wheel and deal with tariffs.”
“Because of Tariffs, our Country is financially, AND FROM A NATIONAL SECURITY STANDPOINT, FAR STRONGER AND MORE RESPECTED THAN EVER BEFORE,” President Trump said on Truth Social.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that a decision against tariffs would be “a loss for the American people.”
The US Supreme Court could schedule more opinion days over the next two weeks.
