President Trump has provided some insight into the US’s strategy for Venezuela and how the revenue from oil sales will be used, as top US oil companies are scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House in the coming days.
Trump posted on Truth Social:
“I have just been informed that Venezuela is going to be purchasing ONLY American Made Products, with the money they receive from our new Oil Deal. These purchases will include, among other things, American Agricultural Products, and American Made Medicines, Medical Devices, and Equipment to improve Venezuela’s Electric Grid and Energy Facilities. In other words, Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner – A wise choice, and a very good thing for the people of Venezuela, and the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the U.S. will indefinitely control Venezuela’s oil sales. “We’re going to market the crude coming out of Venezuela — first this backed-up stored oil, and then indefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace… We need to have that leverage and that control of those oil sales to drive the changes that simply must happen in Venezuela.”
The Energy Department said in a fact sheet, “The United States government has begun marketing Venezuelan crude oil in the global marketplace. We have engaged the world’s leading commodity marketers and key banks to execute and provide financial support for these crude oil and crude products sales.”
The White House also stated that President Trump maintains the right to employ military force to safeguard American oil workers in Venezuela.
President Trump’s comments come after his Tuesday statement that Venezuela would transfer 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the US, worth over $2 billion.
