President Trump has paused the imposition of 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports, shortly before the duties were set to take effect at midnight.
The 50% tariffs would have affected Canadian imports, including hockey sticks and wine. They were announced last month as a response to the Trump administration’s claims of Canadian trade discrimination in the motor vehicle, alcohol, and dairy sectors.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL! The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
A separate post from Trump’s trade representative stated that the deal will include market access for American goods and other commitments, “Congratulations Mr. President. The deal will include comprehensive market access for all American goods, economic security commitments, digital trade alignment, and many important provisions that will continue to protect our market and American workers, along with our Canadian partners.”
A post by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the pause, stating that “substantial progress has been made, although there is still important work to be done.”
