Speaking in Japan after a meeting with the country’s first female leader, Sanae Takaichi, President Trump praised the U.S.-Japan alliance and commended Takaichi for her plans to increase defense spending.
Following the talks, both governments released lists of upcoming projects involving energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals, with Japanese companies contemplating investments of up to $400 billion.
Trump told Takaichi, “Anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there. We are an ally at the strongest level.”
Takaichi, elected earlier this month, is described as a protégée of Shinzo Abe, the late Japanese leader and Trump’s former golf buddy.
According to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, during the meeting, Takaichi praised Trump’s efforts to settle global conflicts and vowed to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Earlier this year, Tokyo committed to offering $550 billion in strategic U.S. investments, loans, and guarantees as part of a deal to gain relief from Trump’s high import tariffs.
