President Donald Trump gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, directly addressing an audience that has been unsettled by his increasing aggression toward Greenland, an allied territory.
The President requested “immediate negotiations” with Denmark to “discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.” However, he ruled out the use of the U.S. Military in the takeover, saying, “People thought I would use force. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”
“All we want from Denmark … is this land on which we are going to build the greatest golden dome ever built,” Trump said, insisting it’s “a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many many decades.”
During his address, the President described the U.S. economy as an ‘economic miracle’ and stated this is positive news for Europe, as the “USA is the economic engine on the planet.”
President Trump said, “When America booms, the entire world booms. It’s been the history … you all follow us down, and you follow us up.”
Trump’s words were taken as a direct response to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Davos address on Tuesday in which he called a rules-based order led by the United States “a pleasant fiction.”
Carney advised companies and nations to forge their own way when, as he described it, “great powers abandon even the pretense of rules and values for the unhindered pursuit of their power and interest.”
Trump criticized Carney’s speech, saying, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, next time you make your statements.”
