Today, President Donald Trump announced that he has decided to postpone a 50% tariff on imports from the European Union until July 9.
Despite previously indicating that he was “not looking for a deal” with the EU and that a 50% tariff was set to take effect on June 1, Trump stated that he had a “very nice call” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which led to the his decision.
Speaking to the media in New Jersey, Trump stated that Von der Leyen “expressed her desire to engage in serious negotiations… July 9 was the date she requested for the delay from June 1, and I agreed to that. She mentioned that we will quickly come together to see if we can reach an agreement.”
After the call, Von der Leyen tweeted: “The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship… Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.”
Shortly after his remarks to reporters, Trump shared on Truth Social that “talks will begin rapidly.”
