On Aug. 7, the state of Texas launched a suit against British oil and gas company Shell over supposed environmental damage caused by a chemical plant fire in Houston last May.
The suit alleges that the days spent by firefighters to put out the flames resulted in 68.7 million gallons of wastewater flowing into the Houston Ship Channel, a stormwater pond and water treatment plants.
Texas also purports that the chemical fire released “mass quantities” of airborne contaminants into the local air.
The state is reportedly seeking monetary damages of an unspecified amount greater than $1 million.
