Starting today, President Trump has implemented a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imported into the U.S.
The European Commission responded almost immediately, confirming it would impose counter tariffs on $28 billion of U.S. goods from April 1.
Following the announcement, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen made a written statement saying the E.U. “deeply regret this measure” however, they were left with no choice but to retaliate to the “unjustified trade restrictions”.
Speaking to the media at a press conference in Strausbourg today, von der Leyen noted, “Nobody needs that on both sides, neither in the European Union, nor in the United States… “In the meantime, we will always remain open to negotiations. We firmly believe that in a world fraught with geoeconomic and political uncertainties, it is not in our common interest to burden our economies with such tariffs.”
E.U. trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič stated, “The disruption caused by tariffs can be avoided if the US administration accepts our extended hand and collaborates with us to strike a deal.”
