As the Supreme Court decision on the legality of Trump’s use of the IEEPA to impose tariffs approaches this week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has told reporters that it is ‘very unlikely’ the court will overturn President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs.
Bessent said, “I believe that it is very unlikely that the Supreme Court will overrule a president’s signature economic policy… They did not overrule Obamacare, I believe that the Supreme Court does not want to create chaos.”
The Treasury Secretary stated that Trump’s recent tariffs on Europe related to Greenland are a reaction to an emergency.
“The national emergency is avoiding a national emergency… It is a strategic decision by the president … he is able to use the economic might of the U.S. to avoid a hot war.”
“I believe that the Europeans will understand that this is best for Greenland, best for Europe and best for the United States,” he said.
The Supreme Court is likely to rule on Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs before its session concludes, potentially as early as this week.
