Arm, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, is expected to debut artificial intelligence chips by 2025, hoping to capture the intensifying market.
SoftBank is discussing production with contract manufacturing, including Taiwan’s TSMC. The AI chip unit is planned to be set up by spring 2025, with production beginning in fall 2025.
Arm designs the architecture upon which the chips are built, then sells the license to companies. According to the company, 99% of premium smartphones use Arm technology. In building its own chips, Arm will pay for the initial development costs.
Share prices for Arm have increased almost 45% in 2024, and its market capitalization is more than $113 billion. SoftBank acquired the company in 2016 for $32 billion.
