New research from Stanford University and Gusto, a human resources company, found that remote workers are increasingly living farther away from their places of work.
The report determined that the typical distance between where an employee lives to where the employer is located increased from 10 miles in 2019 to 27 miles in 2023. It also noted that more than 5% of workers lived more than 50 miles away from their employer last year.
“The pro-typical employee who lives far away from his or her employer is a high-earning millennial working in the Information sector or in Finance & Insurance,” the report stated.
Colorado is home to the highest percentage of remote workers at 21, while just 5.5% of workers in Mississippi work from home. Additionally, the research found that the number of people working remotely decreased as their annual wages went up.
