OpenAI announced the release of its latest AI model, “GPT-4o mini,” on Thursday, aiming to expand the use of its popular chatbot. The company described the new model as the most capable and cost-efficient small model currently available, with plans to integrate image, video, and audio capabilities in the future. The mini model is a variant of GPT-4o, which OpenAI launched in May, featuring improved audio, video, and text capabilities across 50 languages.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft and valued at over $80 billion, is under pressure to maintain its leadership in the generative AI market while managing high costs associated with developing and training its models. The release of GPT-4o mini aligns with OpenAI’s push towards “multimodality,” which integrates various types of AI-generated media such as text, images, audio, and video into one tool. This approach reflects OpenAI’s vision of creating AI that can interact with the world in a more human-like, multi-sensory manner.
GPT-4o mini will be available to free users of ChatGPT, as well as ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers starting Thursday, with availability for ChatGPT Enterprise users scheduled for next week. This launch is part of OpenAI’s strategy to make advanced AI capabilities more accessible while continuing to innovate in the field of AI technology.
