Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has announced that the number of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, will double in December. The statement comes following the rollout of its self-driving service in the city in June.
Musk took to X to make the announcement, writing: “The Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Austin should roughly double next month.”
Tesla’s robotaxi service currently operates in two cities, Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, while last week the company secured a permit to begin its operations in Arizona.
Musk said in October that he expected robotaxis would be operating in eight to ten metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
Musk’s comments follow industry doubts that Tesla is keeping up with the advancing technology standards of the EV market. This week, the CEO also posted a retort regarding the skepticism about Tesla’s AI chip engineering.
Musk wrote on X: “Most people don’t know that Tesla has had an advanced AI chip and board engineering team for many years. That team has already designed and deployed several million AI chips in our cars and data centers. These chips are what enable Tesla to be the leader in real-world AI. The current version in cars is AI4, we are close to taping out AI5 and are starting work on AI6. Our goal is to bring a new AI chip design to volume production every 12 months.”
“We expect to build chips at higher volumes ultimately than all other AI chips combined. Read that sentence again, as I’m not kidding. These chips will profoundly change the world in positive ways, saving millions of lives due to safer driving and providing advanced medical care to all people via Optimus.”
Tesla’s European sales fell 48.5% in October versus the same month last year, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association on Tuesday.
