The US Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Kahn, will reportedly lead an anti-trust investigation into Microsoft.
The FTC plans to investigate Microsoft’s global operations, including its cloud computing, software licensing, cybersecurity, and AI businesses. The investigation, which has been building for over a year, demands information regarding accusations of limiting competition by using restrictive licensing. Customers who combine data between rival services are charged a fee. The FTC will also study allegations that AI tools used within Office and Outlook are areas of concern regarding privacy.
FTC Chair Lina Khan, who has come under fire from Trump, allegedly approved the investigation before her predicted departure in January. President-elect Trump has stated that he will fire Kahn when he takes office. There is a threat that the new administration could also toss out any current FTC investigations.
Microsoft has been under the microscope of the FTC recently due to their products being involved in a number of high-profile security breaches. Microsoft, as the main provider of software to the US Government, has been labeled unsafe and “inadequate” by the federal Cyber Safety Board.
