Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has testified before a jury for the first time regarding allegations that social media platforms, including Instagram, negatively impact children’s mental health.
Central to the testimony were questions regarding what Meta knew about the potential risks to young people and whether it took sufficient steps to address them.
Zuckerberg explained that his goal is to create a product with long-term appeal, rather than one that merely hooks users temporarily and causes them to feel negative about themselves.
Kaley, a 20-year-old woman, claims that Instagram and YouTube were intentionally created to be addictive, hooking her since elementary school and leading to anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia.
The lawsuit claims that Meta intentionally designed its platforms to encourage continuous scrolling and increase profits, but Zuckerberg stated that the company’s current focus is on “utility and value.”
