Today, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken the stand in the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust trial against his social media company, Meta.
Zuckerberg is contesting the FTC’s allegations regarding his company’s most significant acquisitions — Instagram and WhatsApp — which the FTC claims constitute an illegal “social network monopoly.”
FTC lawyer Daniel Matheson stated today that “consumers lack reasonable alternatives” to Meta’s platforms.
Despite historically functioning independently from the U.S. Administration, the FTC is expected to see President Trump involve himself in the trial at some point. On April 2, Zuckerberg was reportedly seen at the White House to persuade Trump to dismiss the case.
The outcome of the case is expected to create significant shockwaves in the tech community. If Meta loses the case filed by the Federal Trade Commission, it will mean the company will be forced to divest some of its acquisitions.
