Following the start of applications for tariff refunds, President Trump said he would remember companies that opt not to pursue refunds on duties paid after the Supreme Court invalidated a major part of his tariffs.
Trump told reporters, “Actually, if they don’t do that, they’ve got to know me very well,” he said. “If they don’t do that, I’ll remember them.”
The comments follow the Supreme Court’s February ruling, which denied Trump’s attempt to use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose “reciprocal” tariffs on imports from nearly every country. This decision opened the door to a complex process that might result in the largest repayment in US history.
On Monday, US Customs and Border Protection launched a web portal allowing importers to request refunds, potentially totaling over $160 billion.
Numerous companies, such as Costco Wholesale Corp. and FedEx Corp., have individually filed lawsuits in the Court of International Trade to safeguard their right to a refund if the Trump administration challenges them.
