Joker: Folie à Deux has fallen from the top of the North American box office, with a massive 80% drop from last weekend’s number one spot.
Debuting at $40m, the film made just $7.1m this week. This is a record-breaking collapse for a comic-book movie.
Folie à Deux was overtaken by indie horror film Terrifier 3, which drew in an estimated $18.2m over the weekend. The Joker sequel was also trumped by animated film The Wild Robot, which claimed second place, taking $13.4m.
Film critics have offered a range of unkind reviews about Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, calling it “bleak and daring” but also “depressingly dull and plodding”. Poor editing and marketing have been labelled as one of its significant downfalls with cinema fans.
It has been predicted that the film is on course for a $200m loss, with industry analysts projecting it to earn a total of $65m at the North American box office and around $215m worldwide, for a total of $280m. This would fall well below the $300m the film cost to produce and promote
Folie à Deux will have an early debut on streaming platforms if it continues to poorly perform at the box office.
