Ahead of approaching winter storms, North American airlines are permitting passengers to change their travel plans in advance.
A winter storm warning has been issued for New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island, starting Friday afternoon, with snowfall totals possibly reaching 9 inches, mostly overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
More than 1,000 flights across the US had been canceled, according to FlightAware.
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and other carriers have waived change fees for restrictive basic economy tickets and will not charge extra for fare differences for flights to and from several area airports, including Philadelphia International Airport, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
Passengers must complete their travel by year’s end if they change their flights.
In Canada, WestJet, Air Canada, and Flair Airlines have been helping travelers flying to or from Vancouver International Airport since a storm began affecting southern Alberta with bands of heavy snow on Wednesday, Dec. 24.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for the region with 10 to 15 cm of snowfall expected.
