In response to popular demand, Google account holders can now update their @gmail.com address to a new one while keeping all their data and services, according to an update today on Google’s account help page.
The support page indicates that this feature is being gradually rolled out to all users, suggesting full global availability will take some time.
With the new policy, changing your address means the old address remains as an alias, so emails sent there will still arrive in your inbox, and the old address can still be used to sign into Google services like Drive, Maps, and YouTube.
Previously, obtaining a new Gmail address involved creating a new account and manually transferring data, a process that was complex and risked disrupting third-party app integrations.
After changing their Gmail address, users cannot create another new Gmail account for 12 months or delete the new address. Google has not officially announced this change, which was initially spotted in user forums and tech communities.
