General Motors is reshaping its strategy to include plug-in hybrid versions of certain models in North America in response to stricter federal regulations, CEO Mary Barra said. Currently, a traditional hybrid version of the Chevrolet Corvette is GM’s sole U.S. hybrid offering.
“Let me be clear, GM remains committed to eliminating tailpipe emissions from our light-duty vehicles by 2035, but, in the interim, deploying plug-in technology in strategic segments will deliver some of the environment or environmental benefits of EVs as the nation continues to build this charging infrastructure,” Barra said.
She indicated the company may leverage plug-in hybrid technology its already using in China and other overseas markets.
Previously, GM’s had planned to shift to all-electric vehicles, rather than offer plug-in hybrids. Other automakers have invested billions in the shift to all-electric vehicles, and the Biden administration has made it a priority to increase the number of EVs in the U.S.
