Following President Trump’s reversal on European tariffs due to the disagreement over Greenland, the European Commission announced it will propose delaying for another six months an EU package of retaliatory trade measures against the U.S. valued at 93 billion euros ($109.19 billion).
The package, prepared in the first half of 2025 was put on hold for six months after Brussels and Washington reached a joint trade agreement in August 2025.
However, President Trump’s recent warning to impose 10% tariffs on eight European nations over Washington’s attempt to acquire Greenland brought the retaliatory package back into consideration for the EU, should Trump follow through with his threat.
Commission spokesman Olof Gill stated, “With the removal of the tariff threat by the U.S. we can now return to the important business of implementing the joint EU-US statement.”
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “What a great trip to Davos it was. So many things accomplished, including the framework of a deal with NATO on Greenland. Also, the BOARD OF PEACE. WOW!!! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT”
The retaliatory tariffs were scheduled to be implemented on February 7.
