Elon Musk has revived his complaint against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT maker and its founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, breached the company’s founding mission to develop AI technology for the benefit of humanity. The new lawsuit, filed in federal court in Northern California, claims Altman and Brockman manipulated Musk into co-founding OpenAI by promising a safer and more transparent nonprofit structure, which Musk’s lawyer Marc Toberoff describes as part of a “long con.”
The lawsuit argues that OpenAI broke federal racketeering laws and asserts that assurances about its nonprofit status were the basis for Musk’s involvement. This follows a similar lawsuit Musk withdrew in June without explanation, which accused OpenAI of violating its founding agreement to keep its technology open source. Musk’s new suit is said to be more forceful, highlighting the alleged conspiracy to defraud him.
Additionally, the suit claims that OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft would revoke the tech giant’s rights to OpenAI’s technology once artificial general intelligence (AGI) is achieved. This legal battle underscores ongoing tensions about the direction and control of AI development.
