Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, has revealed that he believes the AI tools being developed by Anthropic and other companies could potentially eliminate 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs and increase unemployment rates to as high as 20% within the next one to five years.
In an interview with the media, Amodei cautioned that the impact of this technology on unemployment may occur sooner than anticipated by political leaders and businesses, which may not be adequately prepared for the consequences of job loss.
Amodi referred to the recent survey by the World Economic Forum which revealed that 41% of employers plan to downsize their workforce due to AI automation by 2030.
He stated that the ability of AI systems which “summarize documents, analyze multiple sources, and generate reports or write computer code” means that they compete with the capabilities of a skilled college student and will significantly reduce entry-level white-collar jobs.
Amodi warned that AI companies whose technologies are adopted on a wide scale should be subject to an extra tax, adding, “It’s definitely not in my economic interest to say that, but I think this is something we should consider.”
“It’s eerie the extent to which the broader public and politicians, legislators, I don’t think, are fully aware of what’s going on,” he stated, “We have to act now. We can’t just sleepwalk into it.”
Amodei also indicated that humans will soon face the reality of AI surpassing them in “almost all intellectual tasks,” and eventually, no job will be safe from AI automation, including roles held by CEOs. In such a scenario, he noted, “we’re going to have to think about how to order our society.”
The CEO noted, “We can see where the trend is going, and that’s what’s driving some of the concern about AI in the workforce.”
